man, already been a rough year.  sick 2 times already and it's still only january!
kids are like a time bomb of virus' just waiting to explode.  i'm exhausted...

it's nice really getting to know a place and its history.
i came across this old photo of topanga point back when it was still a private beach with houses.
some of the older guys always talk about how it used to be back when you had to sneak out and how much localism there use to be.  people always getting knocked about,  tires getting deflated, you know..
i was able to spend a good amount of the day at the beach at topanga to see the sunrise alone in the lineup, share some waves and laughs with the morning crew, tag team the late morning shift, have lunch at the reel inn across the street, let rafael play in the afternoon low tide looking for crabs and sea anemones, then get the long view of the point at sunset from the chart house.  topanga's one of those places that exists between the folds of reality.  just outside the bustle of the heart of LA, but not far enough out to be like malibu.  the little pocket of a point throws down some classic lines though with the right conditions.  'you just gotta pay attention to the conditions' is what they all say. lots of different shades, views, faces, but indelibly all california. after sharing so many quiet lonely dawns with the spot, i kind of feel like an adopted son of sorts, or at least that i'm coming to understand something indescribable about the place that exists just for me.

Steaming City http://vimeo.com/5037736 About this video: "San Francisco, shot from Yerba Buena Island over the course of 4 hours; picture every 7-15sec. I decided to do another time lapse of the city from Yerba Buena Island. Last Tuesday a storm was passing by and I thought this might be the perfect setting. I found a great vantage point right above a cliff in an opening in vegetation after pushing through some trees and underbrush. Since it was a rainy day I brought all my rain gear with me. My rain pants and jacket kept me dry while the camera was wrapped in a transparent vegetable plastic bag from the Berkeley Bowl... All in all it was a pretty wet experience... As the sun set, I was a bit disappointed as I was hoping again for some more color in the clouds. I was just about to pack up as the city lights slowly became strong enough to illuminate the clouds. I decided to wait a little longer and see what was going to happen. Slowly the clouds started glowing and it almost looked like the city was ablaze. I am no arsonist but the bright orange against the dark blue sky looked beautiful. It got darker and the glowing city with the moving clouds gave the impression of a steaming city. Then the fog started to roll in and the view across the Bay got a little blurry. The mist started to form droplets on the lens and kept me busy cleaning it after every shot. I did this for a while but then grew tiered of it... So I packed up and headed home. I am really glad I decided to stay longer. I think nightfall saved this time lapse.... the new year

now that some time has passed since the new year, i've had a chance to think about what this year's going to mean to me.  it's been too easy to get sidetracked; myopically thinking too much about certain things, and thus losing sight of any real goal.  losing focus, losing energy...losing balance.  my hope is to 1) really understand what those goals are and what they'll mean to me, and 2) to get back on track and try to claw my way towards them by any means possible. 

a funny thing happened this morning while sitting in the lineup, between sets, one of those wirey water birds surfaced near me with his morning breakfast.  He had chased down and caught a very large sea bass that was literally 3/4 its size and was now faced with the task of trying to stuff that enormous thing down its narrow gullet.  It took the bird a few tries, undoubtedly involving some internal reappropriation of space, but it managed to fit that entire fish in.  He seemed set for the next week.  Sometimes the very simplest acts of nature can provide strong and clear metaphors indicating what is truly achievable if we keep our eyes, ears, minds (and mouths) wide open.

Quite possibly the lowest tide I've seen at topanga.
The only ridable spot (later proven wrong), was sunset.
It's strange that sunset is one of the only places that seems to break when all other places are bunk.
Against my better judgement, i decided to join the 4 longboarders on foam bz boards out there.  It had been 3 weeks since being in the water, so i chalk it up to being delusional. 
Took Rafael's trusty 4'-11" mini-simmons out and caught one wave.
When all four longboarders split and left me alone in the lineup in the middle of a rain squall, i started thinking about all of those breaching sightings out there and decided that getting eaten by whitey at that crappy place waiting for 1 foot waves just didn't add up so i split too...
